Scarce Royal Exchange (Non Local) penny token dated 1812. Obverse: Bare-headed bust of George III to right draped in ermine with legend: “ONE PENNY TOKEN 1812”. Reverse: View of the Royal Exchange with legend: “FOR PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION ROYAL EXCHANGE”. Centre grained (\\\\\) edge. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' “British Copper Tokens 1811-1820” as “SCARCE”. Thought to have been issued by Abel Round, a maltster with a business in Wednesbury, but this cannot be corroborated. Nice collectable condition, see photograph.
