Griffin’s Withymoor (Worcestershire) copper penny token dated 1813. Obverse: Detailed view of a forge and drop-hammers with: “WITHYMOOR SCYTHE WORKS” on a banner above, and “ONE PENNY TOKEN 1813” in the exergue below. Reverse: A scythe and assorted knives above crossed shovels: “ONE POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS PAYABLE BY * JAS GRIFFIN & SONS.”. Centre-grained edge. James Griffin & Sons were manufacturers of agricultural implements with their business situated in Netherton, near Dudley, Worcestershire, not Staffordshire as Davis stated. Nice collectable condition with usual slightly light strike near the edges, see photograph.
