Christopher & Jennett's Stockton-on-Tees Penny 1813


Christopher & Jennett's Stockton-on-Tees (County Durham) copper penny token dated 1813. Obverse: Stockton's bridge over the River Tees with legend: “CHRISTOPHER & JENNETT * STOCKTON * TEES 1813”. Reverse: Britannia seated to left holding an olive branch and trident with ship in the distance and legend: “BRITANNIA * ONE PENNY TOKEN”. Centre-grained edge (\\\\\). Christopher & Jennett were booksellers and printers with a business in Stockton-on-Tees. The bridge view is thought to have been taken from an engraving by Thomas Bewick. Nice collectable condition, may have been cleaned in the past but now toning nicely, see photograph.
