Christopher & Jennett's Stockton-on-Tees Penny 1813


Christopher & Jennett's Stockton-on-Tees (County Durham) copper penny token dated 1813. Obverse: Stockton's bridge over the River Tees with legend: “CHRISTOPHER & JENNETT * STOCKTON * TEES 1813”. Reverse: Britannia seated to left holding an olive branch and trident with ship in the distance and legend: “BRITANNIA * ONE PENNY TOKEN”. Centre-grained edge. Christopher & Jennett were booksellers and printers with a business in Stockton-on-Tees. The bridge view is thought to have been taken from an engraving by Thomas Bewick. Nice collectable condition, see photograph.
