Scarce Roscoe Place Sheffield Penny 1813


Scarce Roscoe Place Sheffield (Yorkshire) copper penny token dated 1813. Obverse: Detailed view of a large manufactory with legend: “ROSCOE PLACE SHEFFIELD”. Reverse: Commerce seated on bale holding scales and cornucopia with ship in distance and legend: “ONE PENNY TOKEN 1813”. Centre-grained edge (\\\\\). These are thought to have been issued by Younge & Deakin, merchants and button manufacturers, acting as agents for Shaw, Jobson & Co., of Roscoe Place. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' “British Copper Tokens 1811-1820” as “SCARCE”. Good collectable condition with usual weak obverse strike, see photograph.
