Rare Sedbury Iron Works Penny

Rare Sedbury Iron Works penny token undated. Obverse: Nice view of the iron works with smoking chimneys and legend: “GENUINE BRITISH COPPER SEDBURY IRON WORKS”. Reverse: Legend on three lines in centre within wreath: “ONE PENNY TOKEN”. Diagonally grained edge (//////). Although Davis attributed this to Sedbury in Gloucestershire, Paul Withers has found no evidence for this and suggests it is either from elsewhere, or may be a concoction. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' “British Copper Tokens 1811-1820” as: “R - RARE”. Good collectable condition for type, see photograph.

Withers No: 970, Davis Gloucestershire No: 16. Diameter 34.3mm. (↑↓) VF-. £40.00
