Francis Newton’s Norwich (Norfolk) copper halfpenny token dated 1811. Obverse: Britannia standing holding lance and shield with a large lion behind her and legend: “NEWTON SILVERSMTH AND JEWELLER”. Reverse: Arms of the City of Norwich consisting of a triple-towered castle and lion with legend: “NORWICH MDCCCXI”. Centre-grained edge. Francis Newton was a Silversmith and Jeweller with a business probably in Cockey Lane, Norwich. In addition, he might also have been a haberdasher and hosier operating from these premises, or others in Cockey Lane. Reasonable collectable condition, see photograph.
