Scarce Francis Basset's Cornish Mines Penny 1812


Scarce Francis Basset's Cornish Mines (Cornwall) copper penny token dated 1812. Obverse: Legend on two lines in centre and within border round periphery: "SUCCESS TO THE CORNISH MINES 1812 PENNY PIECE". Reverse: The family arms of Francis Basset with banner beneath: "PRO REGE ET POPULO", (for King and people). Centre-grained edge (\\\\\). Francis Basset (Baron de Dunstanville) owned the land on which the mine stood and was the most prominent mine owner. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' "British Copper Tokens 1811-1820" as "SCARCE". Good collectable condition with small reverse flan flaw, see photograph.
