Scarce James Pardoe's Burton (Staffordshire) penny token dated 1814. Obverse: Detailed view of a mill with legend: “PAYABLE BY JAMES PARDOE BURTON 1814”. Reverse: Legend on three lines in centre of oak wreath: “ONE PENNY TOKEN”. Diagonally milled edge (//////). Davis suggests that James Pardoe was a tape and cotton manufacturer. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' "British Copper Tokens 1811-1820" as "SCARCE". Good collectable condition with usual weak strike in legends, see photograph.
