Extremely Rare Bradford Workhouse Counterfeit Penny 1812

Extremely Rare Bradford Workhouse (Yorkshire) penny token countermarked on a Union Copper Company Birmingham penny dated 1812. Obverse: Two curved "nonsense" countermarks. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' "British Copper Tokens 1811-1820" as "RRR - EXTREMELY RARE". Countermarking existing tokens was cheaper than issuing new ones but left the way open to counterfeiters as seen in this example. Strong countermark on poor token with edge knocks, see photograph.

Withers No: 413b(variety of). Diameter 36.2mm. C/Mark VF, Token Poor. £25.00
