Very Rare Birmingham Workhouse (Warwickshire) copper penny token dated 1812. Obverse: View of the workhouse: “BIRMINGHAM 1812 ONE PENNY”. Reverse: Shield: “ONE POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS PAYABLE AT THE WORKHOUSE”. Centre grained (/////) edge. The Birmingham Workhouse for the Overseers of the Poor was located in Lichfield Street, Birmingham and accommodated 600 paupers and children at its peak. Listed in Withers' "British Copper Tokens 1811-1820" as "RR - VERY RARE". Reasonable collectable condition, see photograph.
