James Atherton's Bilston (Staffordshire) penny token dated 1813. Obverse: Beehive and bees in square border in centre with legend: “ONE POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS 1813 ”. Reverse: Three cannon balls in centre with legend: “PAYABLE BY JAMES ATHERTON BILSTON ”. Faintly grained edge. Issued by James Atherton who is recorded as nail caster and pawnbroker, and is thought to have supplied cannon balls to the government. Nice collectable condition, see photograph.
