Gordon Cummings Fort Augustus Wild Sports Two Shillings Token

Gordon Cummings Fort Augustus (Invernesshire) bronze two shillings token. Obverse: Rampant lion holding sword with a banner above reading : "COURAGE" and legend "+ GORDON CUMMINGS WILD SPORTS". Reverse: Value "TWO SHILLINGS" on two lines with elaborate ornamentation above and below. Plain edge. Gordon Cummings, son of Sir William Gordon-Cummings, returned from army service in India and became a deer stalker in Scotland. This proving too tame he went to North America and became a hunter, then went on to Africa for more of the same. He had the bodies of his kills preserved and exhibited them at the Great Exhibition in 1851 which proved very popular. Returning to Fort Augustus in 1858, he opened a private museum housing his trophies, finally dying in 1866.
