Obverse: Crowned bust to left with "XL" indicating denomination behind the head and legend: "CAR • D:G • SCOT • ANG • FR • ET • HIB • R •" (Charles by the grace of God King of Scotland England France and Ireland). Reverse: Crown over thistle with two pellets above the crown and legend: "SALVS • REIPVB • SVPREMA • LEX •" (The safety of the state is the supreme law).
