Charles I Forty Pence Briot's 1636 Issue


Charles I (1625-1649) silver forty pence (quarter merk), Second Coinage, Briot's issue of 1636 with beaded inner circles. Obverse: Crowned bust to left with "XL", indicating denomination, behind the head with legend: "CAR D G SCOT ANG FR ET HIB R" (Charles by the grace of God King of Scotland England France and Ireland). Reverse: Crown over thistle with legend: "SALVS REIP : SVPR LEX " (The safety of the state is the supreme law). Reasonable collectable condition for type, see photograph.
