Charles I First Coinage Twelve Shillings


Charles I (1625-1649) silver twelve shillings, First Coinage (1625-1634), undated. Obverse: Crowned bust to right with "XII" indicating denomination behind the head with legend in small letters: "CAROLVS D.G. MAG BRIT FRAN & HIB REX" (Charles by the grace of God King of Great Britain France and Ireland). Reverse: Royal shield with the Scottish arms in the first and fourth quarters with legend: "QVAE DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET" (What God hath joined together let no man put asunder). Ex-M&E Stewart and M. Gietzelt Collections. Reasonable collectable condition, slightly double struck, see photograph.
