Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567) First Period (1542-1558) billon penny. Obverse: Facing bust of the young Queen with legend: "+MARIA • D • G • R • SCOTORVM", (Mary by the grace of God Queen of Scots). Reverse: Long cross with cinquefoils in first and third quarters and crowns in second and fourth with legend: OPIDVM DINBVR", (Town of Edinburgh). The cinquefoils refer to the Earl of Arran who was acting as Regent while Mary was still under age. Good collectable condition for type with weak strike in places and a little inert verdegris, see photograph. Spink No: S.5440. Diameter 14.2mm.
