Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567), Edinburgh bawbee (six pence), first period (1542-58). Obverse: Open crown with nearly full band over thistle with "M" and "R" either side. Legend with lob-topped "A"s and "J" for "I": "+MARJA • D • G • R • SCOTORVM", (Mary by the grace of God Queen of Scots). Reverse: Voided saltire cross with crown at centre and cinquefoils either side with reversed "N" in legend: "♣OPPIDVM EDINBVRGI", (Town of Edinburgh). The cinquefoils on the reverse refer to the Earl of Arran who was acting as Regent while Mary was still under age. Good collectable condition on irregular flan, see photograph.
