Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567), Edinburgh bawbee (six pence), first period (1542-58). Obverse: Crowned thistle with "MR" either side and legend: "+MARIA D • G • R • SCOTORVM", (Mary by the grace of God Queen of Scots). Reverse: Voided saltire cross with crown at centre and cinquefoils either side with legend: "♣OPPIDVM EDINBVRGI", (Town of Edinburgh). The cinquefoils on the reverse refer to the Earl of Arran who was acting as Regent while Mary was still under age. Good collectable condition on slightly irregular flan, see photograph.
