Scottish Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567) Edinburgh bawbee (six pence), first period (1542-58), plain reverse cross, mint mark cross obverse and lis reverse. Obverse: Crowned thistle with "MR" either side and legend with lob-topped, barred "A"s: "+MARIA • D:G • REGINA • SCOTORV", (Mary by the grace of God Queen of Scots), pellets on the crown. Reverse: Plain saltire cross with crown in centre and cinquefoils either side with legend: "♣OPPIDVM • EDINBVRGI", (Town of Edinburgh). The cinquefoils refer to the Earl of Arran who was acting as Regent while Mary was still under age. Nice collectable condition on large flan, a little light verdegris, see photograph.
