Francis & Mary Queen of Scots Half Testoon 1560

Francis & Mary Queen of Scots (1558-1560) second period, silver half testoon (two shillings and sixpence) Type II, dated 1560 with “Q” at end of obverse legend. Obverse: Crowned conjoined arms of France and Scotland with legend: “FRAN • ET • MA • D G R R • FRANCO • SCOTOR Q” (Francis and Mary by the grace of God King and Queen of France and Scotland). Reverse: Crowned “FM” monogram with crowned lis and thistle either side and legend: “VICIT • LEO • DE • TRIBV • IVDA • 1560” (The lion of the tribe of Judah hath prevailed). The “SCOTOR Q” issue was followed by the “SCOTOR F” issue and may relate to the change of Mint masters during the issue of 1560. With large piercing, otherwise in reasonable collectable condition, see photograph.
