James V (1513-1542), silver groat (eighteen pence), Edinburgh, Holyrood mint, Class IIa/IIb with unbarred "A" on obverse. Obverse: Bust of king to right wearing wide single-arched crown with twelve pellets in the corded band, wearing mantle with no chain, triple pellets in field behind head, legend with large double annulet stops and annulet above "OR" to distinguish obverse dies. Reverse: The Scottish lion rampant within a double tressure on a shield superimposed on a cross fourchée and legend with triple pellet stops. Rare example of late Type II before Type III became the norm. Ex-Timeline Auctions 9/09/19, Lot 3715 - £2,270.00. Obverse slightly double struck which has extended the crown, reverse not illustrated in Stevenson's paper. Good collectable condition on large flan, see photograph.
