Alexander III Edinburgh Penny Class "E2-E"


Alexander III (1249-1286), silver penny, second coinage, class "E2-E". Obverse: Legend: "+ALEXANDER DEI GRA". Letters with incurved uprights and wedge-tailed "R", pellet between "D" and "E". Reverse: Legend: REX SCOTORVM+. Three additional pellets on reverse, one in the second quarter and two in the fourth quarter. Four mullets of five points giving a total of twenty points thus indicating a supposed mint town of Edinburgh. Considered rare by Spink. Good collectable condition on a slightly small flan, see photograph.
