Edward II Berwick Penny Blunt Class 5 - Withers Type 7

Edward II (1307-1327) silver hammered penny, Berwick mint, Blunt Class 5, Withers Type 7, date believed to be between 1312 and 1314. London made dies as Fox Type 11a. The only London made dies used in the series. Obverse: Facing bust and legend: "EDWA R ANGL DNS hyB". Reverse legend: "VIL/LAB/ERE/WYCI". After Edward I had taken Berwick from the Scots in the massacre of 1296, the area remained so unstable that local moneyers produced dies for the coinage rather than continuing with the standard issue of the series, however this is the only issue from dies prepared in London. Reasonable collectable condition with small split, see photograph.

Blunt Class 5, Withers Type 7. Spink No: S.1464(var). Diameter 18.66mm. VG. £45.00
