Alnwick (Northumberland) Alnwick Cocoa Rooms brass penny token, undated. Obverse: Legend on three lines, the top and bottom curved, separated by scrollwork: "ALNWICK + COCOA + ROOMS". Reverse: Legend on six lines with scrollwork: "GOOD FOR ONE PENNYWORTH OF REFRESHMENT AT". Plain edge. Tee, Coffee and Cocoa rooms were popularat the height of the Temperance movement in the mid-1800s to provide alternatives to alcohol consumption at pubs. It is mentioned that Henrietta Paynter, the wife of Henry who had a half share in Shilbottle Coalmine, issued tokens for "Penny Dinners" to those in need which were redeemable at Alnwick Cocoa Rooms.
