Frome Traders Alfred the Great Shilling 1811


Frome Traders' (Somerset) silver shilling dated 1811. Obverse: Bust of Alfred the Great: “FROME SELWOOD TOKEN FOR 12 PENCE”. Reverse: Names of the seven issuers on a cross design and legend around periphery: “A ONE POUND NOTE GIVEN FOR 20 TOKENS AT MESSRS WILLOUGHBYS W. SPARKS W. GERARD GRIFFITH & GOUGH 1811”. Diagonally milled edge. Issued by a group of local traders in order to ease the shortage of small change in the area. Nice collectable condition with dark tone, see photograph.
