Richard Paley's Leeds (Yorkshire) copper halfpenny token dated
1791. Obverse: Standing figure of Bishop Blaize (patron saint of
woolcombers) holding a wool comb in his right hand and a book in his
left, with a lamb at his feet and legend: “ARTIS NOSTRÆ CONDITOR.”. Reverse: Coat
of arms of three stars and a hanging fleece, crested by an owl with
legend: “LEEDS
HALFPENNY 1791”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE OF RICHARD
PALEY .XX.”. Richard Paley was a freeholder, maltster, soap-boiler and
chandler with a business in a locality known as the “Calls” in Leeds.
