Scarce Dudley Castle & Sleeping Shepherd Halfpenny

Scarce Dudley (Worcestershire) copper halfpenny token with date 1790 partly obliterated. Obverse: Distant view of Dudley Castle perched on a hill with trees in the foreground: "DUDLEY TOKEN". Reverse: Beautifully detailed scene of a shepherd asleep beneath a tree with rolling hills and his flock in the background with partly obliterated date "1790" in exergue. Diagonally milled edge. It is not known on whose behalf this token was issued but they obviously used Spence's dies. Listed in Dalton & Hamer as: “SCARCE”. Lovely collectable condition with residual lustre remaining, slightly off-centre, see photograph.
