Rare Hall’s Taxidermist Kendal Mule Penny 1795
Rare Hall's Kendal (Westmoreland – now Cumbria) copper mule Conder penny token dated 1795. Obverse: Legend on six lines in centre and around periphery: “T. HALL CITTY ROAD NEAR FINSBURY SQUARE LONDON 1795 THE FIRST ARTIST IN EUROPE FOR PRESERVING BIRDS BEASTS &.”. Reverse: Cypher of “R&D” crested by a lion: “KENDAL”. Edge inscription: “MANUFACTURED BY W. LUTWYCHE BIRMINGHAM .X.X.”. Thomas Hall was a taxidermist, dealer in curiosities and proprietor of an exhibition of stuffed animals in London. Lutwyche probably muled it with the Kendal obverse for sale to collectors. Listed in Dalton & Hamer as: “RARE”. Interesting combination in good collectable condition, see photograph.
