Biggs General Elliot Birmingham Halfpenny 1792

Biggs’ Birmingham (Warwickshire) copper Conder halfpenny token, dated 1792. Obverse: Bust of General Elliot to the left with legend: “GENERAL ELLIOT.”. Reverse: Fleur-de-Lys in centre and legend: “BIRMINGHAM HALFPENNY 1792”. Plain edge. This was issued by Henry Biggs who was the landlord of a public house named either, the “General Elliot”, or the “Dr. Johnsons Head”, located in Moore Street, Birmingham. General Elliot was the heroic commander of the British garrison of Gibraltar that withstood a Spanish siege lasting over three years. Good collectable condition with usual weak reverse centre, see photograph.
