Allin's Grand Exhibition Birmingham Halfpenny 1796
Allin's Birmingham (Warwickshire) copper
halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: Full length figure of a man
standing in front of a flag and supporting an inscribed shield on which
is inscribed: “ALLIN'S PANORAMA GRAND EXHIBITION ADMITE1s
”, legend: “PEACE AND GOODWILL TO ALL MEN.”. Reverse: Legend on eight
lines and round circumference: “CHEAP CLOTHES & YORK SHOE WAREHOUSE
WHOLESALE & RETAILE. I. ALLIN HAY-MARKET BIRMINGHAM. 1796”. Diagonally
milled edge. John Allin was a tailor, clothier and boot and shoe
salesman with a business in the Hay market, Birmingham. He was also the
proprietor of a "panorama" and this token was used to advertise both.
