Scarce Chester's Bristol (Somerset) copper halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: Arms of the City of Bristol consisting of a sailing ship emerging from behind a castle with legend: “PROSPERITY TO THE CITY OF BRISTOL". Reverse: View of a large Georgian building with legend: "EXCHANGE BRISTOL. 1796". Edge inscription: "BRISTOL FAIR TOKEN". Listed in Dalton & Hamer as "SCARCE". Chester was a pharmacist and chemist with a business in Bristol. He possibly used these tokens at a stall selling medicaments at the fairs held in the exchange. Nice collectable condition with a little spotting, see photograph.
