Spence's Cat Pig's Meat London Farthing 1795

SOLD

Spence’s London (Middlesex) copper Conder farthing token dated 1795. Obverse: Cat in centre with legend: “IN SOCIETY LIVE FREE LIKE ME 1795”. Reverse: View hand pointing to open book on which is written “PIGS MEAT” with legend: “IF LORDS ALL MANKIND ARE * THEN THEY YE RENTS SHOU'D SHARE.”. Plain edge. Thomas Spence was a reformer who started a cheap periodical named “Pigs Meat” or “Lessons for the Swinish Multitude”. His handbills were titled “Loose Meat for the Pigs”. He rarely missed an opportunity to lampoon the politics of the day and spent some time in prison for his efforts. Lovely collectable condition, a very early strike before the dies broke leaving the full legends intact, and a little subdued lustre remaining, see photograph.
