Denton's Coin Dealer Three Blockheads London Farthing 1795

Denton's London (Middlesex) copper Conder farthing token dated 1795. Obverse: Two face-to-face 'worthies' with legend: "WE THREE BLOCKHEADS BE 1795". Reverse: Legend on six lines, the first and last curved: "DENTON DEALER IN COINS HOSPITAL GATE SMITHFIELD". Plain edge. Denton was a coin dealer with a business at Hospital Gate, Smithfield, London. He published the first four volumes of "Vitrtuoso's Companion and Coin Collector's Guide" from this address in 1795-96. Denton fancied himself as a wit. The answer to "Who is the third blockhead?" in the riddle "WE THREE BLOCKHEADS BE" is supposedly "YOU!". It was maybe funnier then! Reasonable collectable condition, see photograph.

D&H Middlesex No: 1053. Diameter 23.3mm. F. £20.00
