Erskine and Gibbs Bill of Rights London Halfpenny 1794

Political and Social Series London (Middlesex) copper halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Two barristers standing holding a banner inscribed: “BILL OF RIGHTS” beneath another banner inscribed: “MAGNA CHARTA” with legend: “ERSKINE AND GIBBS AND TRIAL BY JURY”. Reverse: Legend on nine lines: “T. HARDY. I. H. TOOKE. T. HOLCROFT. I. A. BONNEY. J. JOYCE. S. KID. J. THELWALL. I. RICHTER. I. BAXTER. 1794.”. Diagonally milled edge. These gentlemen were radicals advocating personal liberty and were acquitted of high treason in the sedition trials of that year. The token was issued to make a political point on their behalf.
