Thomas Spence's Bridewell Boy London Halfpenny

 

Thomas Spence’s London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token undated. Obverse: Legend on nine lines: "T SPENCE BOOKSELLER DEALER IN PRINTS & COINS No 8 LITTLE TURNSTILE HOLBORN LONDON". Reverse: Smartly clothed boy carrying a cane in his right hand with legend: "A * BRIDEWELL BOY *". Edge inscription: "SPENCE x DEALER x IN x COINS x LONDON". Bridewell Hospital became a lodging for retired tradesmen who instructed around 140 lads or apprentices in their craft. These Bridewell Boys were dressed in blue uniforms with white hats. Lovely collectable condition with reflective fields, see photograph.
