Thomas Spence’s London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token undated. Obverse: Legend on nine lines: "T SPENCE BOOKSELLER DEALER IN PRINTS & COINS No 8 LITTLE TURNSTILE HOLBORN LONDON". Reverse: Smartly clothed boy carrying a cane in his right hand with legend: "A * BRIDEWELL BOY *". Edge inscription: "SPENCE x DEALER x IN x COINS x LONDON". Bridewell Hospital became a lodging for retired tradesmen who instructed around 140 lads or apprentices in their craft. These Bridewell Boys were dressed in blue uniforms with white hats.
