Pidcock's Antelope & Ostrich Halfpenny 1795

Pidcock’s Zoological Exhibition London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1795. Obverse: An antelope to the left with legend: "* PIDCOCK'S * EXHIBITION * ALIVE", with date: "1795" in exergue. Reverse: Ostrich to the left with legend: "* EXETER CHANGE STRAND LONDON*", with diesinker's name: "JAMES" in exergue. Plain edge. Pidcock was the proprietor of the Exeter 'Change Menagerie and importer of foreign animals. The business later passed to Gilbert Pidcock, and the tickets issued by both men were trade tickets advertising the menagerie and passed for small change in circulation. Lovely collectable condition with the usual die flaw on the obverse in a very early stage, much original lustre remaining and reflective fields on a very thick flan (2.12mm), a very early strike, see photograph.
