Hall's White Negress Taxidermist London Halfpenny 1795

Thomas Hall’s London (Middlesex) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1795. Obverse: View of the celebrated "white negress" with legend: "MRS. NEWSHAM THE WHITE NEGRESS". Reverse: Legend on four lines in centre and around periphery: "TO BE HAD AT THE CURIOSITY HOUSE CITY ROAD * NEAR FINSBURY SQUARE LONDON 1795". Plain edge. Thomas Hall was a taxidermist and proprietor of an exhibition of stuffed animals and other curiosities at his premises at Finsbury Square, London. His "White Negress", Mrs Newsham is thought to have been an African albino who had previously been exhibited at a penny show at Bartholomew Fair. Good collectable condition with uneven reverse colour, see photograph.
