Scarce Burchell's London Halfpenny

Scarce Burchell's London (Middlesex) copper halfpenny-sized token undated. Obverse: Legend on seven lines in centre and round periphery: “BASIL BURCHELL * SOLE PROPRIEROR OF THE ANODYNE NECKLACE FOR CHILDREN CUTTING TEETH". Reverse: Legend on seven lines in centre and round periphery: “BASIL BURCHELL * SOLE PROPRIETOR OF THE FAMOUS SUGAR PLUMBS FOR WORMS No. 79 * LONG ACRE”. Edge inscription: "THIS IS NOT A COIN BUT A MEDAL *+*+*+*+*". Basil Burchell was a vendor of patent medicines and usually pierced his tokens before issue in order to attach them to his "Anodyne Necklace" which was supposed to alleviate distress for children cutting teeth. This is one of the few varieties that escaped piercing. Listed in Dalton & Hamer as "SCARCE". Nice collectable condition for type, see photograph.
