Edinburgh (Lothian) copper halfpenny token dated 1796. Obverse: Water filtering stone with legend: "FOR PURIFYING WATER 1796". Reverse: Bunch of grapes in shield with thistles either side. Plain edge. Bell states that the shield belongs to the Viney family of Kent making Dalton & Hamer's attribution to Edinburgh therefore doubtful. Nice collectable condition for type with weak centres as usual and reverse die flaw at a very early stage, see photograph.
D&H: Lothian No: 1. Diameter 28.7mm. EF-. £40.00
