Jennings’ Spalding (Lincolnshire) copper halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Britannia standing on the shore looking out to sea, with a spear and shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right. In the background are two men, one ploughing behind a horse and the other sowing, while at sea are three different types of ships to the left, and one to the right of Britannia, and a small lion beneath her feet and legend: “SUCCESS TO THE COMMERCE OF BRITAIN”. Reverse: The cypher “T J” on a shield with a half-lion crest with leaves and flowers each side and legend: “SPALDING HALFPENNY 1794”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT T. JENNINGS’S SPALDING & HOLBEACH –X-”. Thomas Jennings was an ironmonger and stationer with businesses in both towns. Lovely collectable condition with much original lustre remaining, see photograph.
