Rare Clarke's Liverpool Ship & Shield Farthing

Rare Liverpool (Lancashire) copper farthing token undated. Obverse: Man of war in full sail to right. Reverse: Cormorant in shield surmounted by another, both holding seaweed in beaks, with bulrushes either side. Plain edge. This was manufactured using halfpenny dies, either struck as is, or cut down from a struck halfpenny. Although listed in Dalton & Hamer as “R - RARE”, I have not found another example. The Noble auction of 1998 lot number 246 suggested that Dalton & Hamer wrongly attributed Lancashire 155 to a cut down Worswick halfpenny, when this cut down Clark farthing that D&H were referring to clearly exists. Unless I'm told otherwise, that makes this specimen of more than extreme rarity. Reasonable collectable condition, see photograph.

D&H Lancashire No: 155. Diameter 24.2mm. Weight 8.5g. F. £75.00
