Lancaster (Lancashire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Bust of John of Gaunt, star under bust, period after legend: “IOHN OF GAUNT DUKE OF LANCASTER.”. Reverse: Shield with no period at end of legend: “HALFPENNY 1794”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE IN LANCASTER LONDON OR LIVERPOOL”. John of Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III, was born at Ghent (Gaunt) around 1340 and was later made the Duke of Lancaster. His son by his first wife, Blanche, later became Henry V.
