John of Gaunt Lancaster Halfpenny 1792

Lancaster (Lancashire) copper halfpenny token dated 1792. Obverse: Crowned bust of John of Gaunt to left: “IOHN OF GAUNT DUKE OF LANCASTER”. Reverse: Arms of the Borough of Lancaster: “LANCASTER HALFPENNY. 1792”. Edge: “PAYABLE IN LONDON BRISTOL & LANCASTER - X -”. Struck from die with a small flaw giving the impression of a nose ring. John of Gaunt, the fourth son of Edward III, was born at Ghent (Gaunt) around 1340 and was later made the Duke of Lancaster. His son by his first wife, Blanche, later became Henry V.
