Rare William Fuggle's Goudhurst Kentish Horse Halfpenny 1794

SOLD

Rare William Fuggle's Goudhurst (Kent) copper halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Kentish horse prancing to the left with legend: “KENT HALFPENNY TOKEN 1794”. Reverse: Shield of arms of the City of Canterbury with legend: “FOR GENERAL CONVENIENCE”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE BY ||||||||||||||||||| GOUDHURST .X.X.X.X”. Listed in Dalton & Hamer as "RARE". William Fuggle was a freeholder and tallow chandler with a business in Goudhurst who was obviously not happy with his name being miss-spelled in the edge inscription, with this specimen having it manually erased completely. Good collectable condition for type with uneven colour and the usual die flaw beginning to develop at the date, see photograph.
