Walter Taylor's Portsmouth (Hampshire) copper halfpenny token dated 1791. Obverse: Helmeted and armoured bust of Sir Bevois to right with legend: “SR BEVOIS SOUTHAMPTON”. Reverse: Shield of arms with legend: “PROMISSORY 1791 HALFPENNY”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT THE OFFICE OF W. TAYLOR R. V. MOODY & CO”. Walter Taylor was, by trade, a ship’s carpenter who invented several improved types of tackle for the Navy, and also an efficient ship’s pump.
