Scarce Brent's Portsmouth (Hampshire) copper halfpenny token undated. Obverse: Three-quarter bust of Viscount Jervis with legend: “VISCOUNT JERVIS & THE GLORIOUS 14. FEBY. 1797”. Reverse: A first-rate man-of-war in full sail to the right with legend:: “UNDER PROVIDENCE YE INVINCIBLE FIFTEEN”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT I. BRENT'S PORTSMOUTH AND PORTSEA XXX”. “I BRENT'S” has been erased, probably as a measure to prevent having to redeem them. Listed in Bell's “Commercial Coins. 1787-1804” as “SCARCE”. John Brent was a shoemaker in Portsea who possibly also had a shop in the adjoining Portsmouth. This commemorates Jervis' victory when his fleet of fifteen ships overcame twenty-seven Spanish ships off Cape St. Vincent. Good collectable condition with uneven colour, see photograph.
