Rare Portsmouth (Hampshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1794. Obverse: Bust to left of John Howard with legend: “IOHN HOWARD F. R. S PHILANTHROPIST”. Reverse: Standing Commerce holding liberty cap on pole with bale behind and legend: “LIBERTY & COMMERCE 1794”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE IN LONDON”. Although a specious token, the reverse die was used for the Talbot Allum & Lee series in the United States. Listed in Bell's “Specious Tokens and those struck for General Circulation 1784-1804” as “RARE”, Bill McIvor more recently placed it as “SCARCE+ to RARE” in CTCJ #35. Good collectable condition for type with usual weak strike in centres, see photograph.
