Wilkins' Newport (Hampshire) copper Conder halfpenny token dated 1792. Obverse: Bust to left with legend: “ROBERT BIRD WILKINS”. Reverse: An early English round ship with legend: “ISLE OF WIGHT HALFPENNY 1792”. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT HIS OFFICE NEWPORT”. Robert Bird Wilkins was an ironmonger, brazier, tinplate worker, bar iron and coal merchant. He was also possibly a freeholder in the county, and a banker in Newport.
