Briscombe Port Canal Halfpenny 1795


Briscombe Port (Gloucestershire) copper halfpenny token dated 1795. Obverse: A sailing barge with a Union Jack flag at it’s stern: “THAMES AND SEVERN CANAL MDCCXCV”. Reverse: Detailed view of the entrance to the canal tunnel under Sapperton Hill. Edge inscription: “PAYABLE AT BRISCOMBE PORT”. Issued by the Thames & Severn Canal Company. The Sapperton Tunnel was nearly 2½ miles long and considered to be one of the engineering triumphs of the time. Nice collectable condition, see photograph.
